STATEWIDE - Gov. Greg Abbott announced Tuesday that he has designated the Muslim Brotherhood and the Council on American-Islamic Relations as foreign terrorist and transnational criminal organizations under Texas law. The move, announced in a statement posted to Abbott’s official Facebook page, bars the groups from purchasing or acquiring land in Texas and grants the state new enforcement power.

Abbott said the designation authorizes the Texas Attorney General to “sue to shut them down,” adding that the action is intended to strengthen state security and restrict the influence of organizations he described as threats.
The governor did not provide specific cases or incidents involving the groups in Texas but said the designations align with his administration’s ongoing efforts to bolster state authority in matters of public safety.
Abbott’s directive takes immediate effect and directs state agencies to review any existing ties, contracts or regulated activities connected to the named organizations.
