SABINE COUNTY, Texas — Authorities in Texas and Louisiana are continuing to search for a missing college student who disappeared Sept. 24 while preparing for a Bassmaster Kayak Series tournament on Toledo Bend Reservoir.
Peyton Hughes, 21, a Campbellsville University student from Kentucky, was pre-practicing with a travel partner for the Sept. 27–28 event when he failed to arrive at a designated meeting place, according to B.A.S.S. His companion alerted authorities, who later located Hughes’ kayak, but the angler has not been found.
Texas Parks and Wildlife Department officers are leading the search, with assistance from the Louisiana Department of Wildlife and Fisheries, the Pendleton Harbor Volunteer Fire Department, the Sabine County Sheriff’s Office, and the Sabine Parish Sheriff’s Office and its dive team.
“The search is ongoing, and TPWD is continuing its investigation,” B.A.S.S. said in a statement. “Our thoughts and prayers are with the angler’s family, friends and fellow competitors during this difficult time. We remain in communication with TPWD and will provide updates as they become available.”
