A Tuesday morning traffic stop escalated into a vehicle and foot pursuit through residential Jasper neighborhoods, ending with an arrest thanks to the sharp nose and swift paws of Jasper PD’s K9 Mak.
According to the Jasper Police Department, Officer Oxener attempted to pull over a beige 2002 Toyota Camry for speeding on West Morris Street shortly before 8 a.m. The driver, later identified as Devin Clark, a 43-year-old Black male, refused to stop, instead blowing through two stop signs before ditching the vehicle behind a home on Seale Street and fleeing on foot.
The department’s K9 unit was quickly called in. K9 Mak was deployed in the area where Clark was last seen scaling a privacy fence—and it didn’t take long for the canine officer to turn up a key piece of evidence: over four ounces of marijuana, believed to have been discarded by Clark during the chase.
A short time later, witnesses spotted Clark running across Martin Luther King Drive near Adams Road. K9 Mak was deployed again and successfully tracked Clark to his location, where officers took him into custody without further incident.
Clark was transported to the Jasper County Jail and is currently being booked on charges of Evading Arrest or Detention in a Motor Vehicle, a state jail felony. Additional charges are expected to follow.
As of press time, Clark’s formal arraignment is still pending.
