At its first meeting since October, the Jasper Economic Development Corporation (JEDCO) returned with new leadership updates, bold development plans, and a powerful economic report revealing more than $264 million in contributions to the local economy since 2018.

The board addressed its recent pause in meetings, explaining that they were advised to hold off until a legal opinion was rendered regarding board status—an opinion that has yet to be issued. The retirement of longtime director Eddie Hopkins in January was also cited as a factor in the extended pause in board activity.

At the meeting, board members and guest speakers introduced a lineup of exciting new initiatives designed to bring jobs, services, and revitalization to the Jasper area:

Wrightway Assisted Living

A proposed memory-care facility that would allow seniors to stay close to home while receiving specialized care for Alzheimer’s and dementia. The project would create up to 10 new jobs and provide peace of mind for local families.

“We’re losing our elderly to other cities,” the speaker said. “They deserve to age with dignity—right here in Jasper.”

Butterfly Trail & Public Art Project

Presented by the Jasper-Lake Sam Rayburn Area Chamber of Commerce, this initiative will establish a scenic butterfly trail featuring native plants, educational signs, and decorative sculptures—celebrating Jasper’s status as the Butterfly Capital of Texas.

“This is where nature meets community,” the presenter said. “It’s something beautiful we can all share.”

Wade Nguyen’s Restaurant & Retail Development

Local entrepreneur Wade Nguyen, owner of Son Asian Bistro, shared plans to revitalize the former Pizza Hut property into a three-building retail and food hub with garden space and food trucks. Nguyen has invested over $800,000 and is requesting $250,000 in infrastructure support to complete site utilities.

“This is my home,” Nguyen said. “We’re building something special for Jasper—and creating 25 jobs in the process.”

Gated Rentals Affordable Housing Expansion

Representatives of the Gated Rentals Project requested additional support to complete utility work. The group aims to provide affordable homes for working families and help address the rising demand for quality housing while directly impacting employment needs in Jasper. Gated Rentals currently have 30 employees and will be increasing to 50 employees soon as per the agreement with JEDCO.

Facade Grant Program

JEDCO’s popular program continues to thrive, with over 25 businesses benefitting from matched investments up to $10,000. Board members praised its role in helping local storefronts improve curb appeal and business sustainability.

The meeting also featured a powerful recap of JEDCO’s contributions from 2018 to 2024:

  • $264.3 million in total economic impact

  • $49 million in wages generated

  • Dozens of local partnerships and expansions at the Airport Industrial Park and Provalus

Looking ahead, JEDCO projects another $40.8 million in economic growth over the next five years, with future meetings expected to focus on connecting funding with shovel-ready projects and workforce initiatives.

“This is about more than numbers,” one board member said. “It’s about helping our people, our businesses, and our community thrive.”
