JASPER, Texas - Superintendent John Seybold confirms that Jasper ISD received no complaints about bullying concerning the 13-year-old junior high school student who passed away on November 23rd.
Questions about the student being bullied have been raised by those in the community.
“The school must follow a state law called David’s Law for any situation involving reports of bullying or even cyberbullying. There is a bully check list protocol that we follow to handle any complaints regarding bullying. We have checked emails, checked with Principals and with counselors, and nothing was ever reported,” said Seybold.
Jasper ISD released the following statement:
“Jasper ISD is deeply saddened to share that we have received news of the tragic death of one of our junior high students. Our hearts go out to the student’s family, friends, and loved ones during this incredibly difficult time.
Counselors will be available at all campuses when students return with Region 5 offering additional counseling resources.
We ask our community to join us in keeping the family, as well as our students and staff, in your prayers. We also respectfully request that the privacy of the family be honored as they navigate this heartbreaking loss.”
The East Texas Banner has reached out to the family but have been asked to give privacy during this difficult time.
David’s Law was brought about in 2017, as Senate Bill 179. The law provides legal remedies to parents and establishes anonymous reporting systems for students. The law is named after David Molak, a 16 -year-old student who died by suicide after being harassed online.
