BROOKELAND, Texas — Jasper County deputies and multiple law enforcement agencies responded to a false report of a shooting and explosives at a home in Brookeland Saturday afternoon, in what officials say was a “swatting” incident.
According to Sheriff Chuck Havard, the Jasper County Sheriff’s Office received a 911 call around 4:42 p.m. on July 27 from a person claiming to have shot his 15-year-old sister and threatening law enforcement with explosive devices.
Deputies and Texas Department of Public Safety troopers responded to the Northview Drive residence and quickly determined the call to be a hoax. The homeowner and nearby neighbors confirmed there was no emergency.
“‘Swatting’ is a terrible new trend that involves someone falsifying an emergency to solicit a heavy police response,” Havard said. “It not only violates the law—it puts both law enforcement and the public in danger.”
The caller used a fictitious name. JCSO is now working with state and federal partners, including the FBI’s Beaumont office, to identify the individual responsible and pursue all applicable charges.
Sheriff Havard thanked the deputies and assisting officers for their swift response and professionalism during the incident.
