Jasper Basketball Elite Camp Returns to Empower Local Youth On and Off the Court

Local youth will have the chance to sharpen their basketball skills and build confidence — both on and off the court — at the upcoming Jasper Basketball Elite Camp, running July 7–11 at the Jasper High School Gymnasium.

Led by Jasper High School Varsity Girls Basketball Coach Bernard Brock, the camp is about far more than drills and free throws. It’s about shaping character.

“Our goal for these kids is to create an environment that lets kids be kids,” Coach Brock shared. “We will teach the fundamentals of basketball, but we are also big on building character. We want to teach them how to deal with adversity. If something is not going your way, how do you change the course? We teach them how to work together and solve problems and differences. That’s on and off the court.”

Coach Brock, who has led basketball camps for more than 15 years, says the rewards of coaching go far beyond wins and losses.

“I have a kid who attended my camps at Lamar University and is now one of my players. She understands exactly who I am and what I stand for. To see her grow throughout the process is amazing.”

The camp welcomes boys and girls entering grades 1 through 12, with daily hours Monday through Thursday from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m., and Friday from 9 a.m. to noon. Campers will receive lunch each day, a basketball, a camp T-shirt, and a certificate. Registration is $90 per player, with a sibling discount of $45 for each additional child.

Early registration will be held this Saturday, July 5, from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Jasper High School Shell Gym.

In closing, Coach Brock leaves campers with a challenge:

“There is a difference between a basketball player and someone who just plays basketball. Which one are you?”
