Here are some items you can include in a hurricane preparedness kit:

• Water: At least one gallon per person per day for drinking and sanitation

• Non-perishable food: For several days

• First aid kit: Including bandages, gauze pads, tweezers, antiseptic, and pain relievers

• Sanitation and hygiene items: Such as hand sanitizer, disinfectant wipes, toilet paper, and feminine hygiene products

• Communication devices: Such as a battery-powered or hand crank radio, NOAA Weather Radio, and flashlight

• Sleeping bags and blankets: For warmth

• Change of clothes and shoes

• Eyeglasses and hearing aids


You can also prepare your home for a hurricane by:

  • Reviewing your insurance coverage

  • Documenting your home possessions

  • Installing storm shutters

  • Testing drains and sump pumps

  • Checking for and repairing roof and foundation issues

  • Adding roof straps

  • Creating an evacuation plan

  • Installing a water alarm and sump pumps with battery backup

  • Installing "check valves" in sewer lines

  • Elevating the heating system, water heater, and electric panel

  • Waterproofing the basement
