Elsie Butler dies at age 99



Elsie S. Butler, resident of Rayburn Country, Texas died at age 99 at Rayburn Healthcare and Rehabilitation on Saturday, February 3, 2024.

Elsie is survived by her son, John P. “Johnny” Butler (Jackie) of Santa Fe, NM; two grandsons, Christopher T. “Chris” Langford (Aimee Tavares) of Arlington, VA and Garrett J. “Gary” Langford (Amanda) of Mesquite, TX; two, granddaughters, Erika A. Butler of Albuquerque, NM and Brittney G. Blakley (David) Broken Arrow, OK; three great-grandsons, Cody Conder (Margaret) of Forth Worth, TX, Mason Langford of Arlington, VA and Thomas J. Langford of Mesquite, TX; two great-granddaughters, Jordan and Taylor Blakey of Broken Arrow, OK and numerous nieces and nephews.  

She was preceded in death by her husband of 66 years, John J. Butler, father, D. Nelson Smith, mother, Lula Mae Smith (Jones); step-mother, Vera Smith; brother, Malcolm A. Smith; sister, Peggy Byergeon and daughter, Judith B. Langford.  

Elsie was born in Lake Providence, LA on August 22, 1924 and grew up on a family farm in Lake Providence in East Carroll Parish, LA.  She married John J. Butler from Oak Grove on May 19, 1945. Elsie and John moved from Shreveport LA to Houston, TX in 1965.  

Elsie and John moved from Houston to Jasper in 1976 to establish Butler Supply Company, selling oilfield exploration supplies to seismograph and offshore “doodlebug” crews throughout TX, LA, MS and the Gulf of Mexico.  They retired to Rayburn Country in 1977.  

A Celebration of Elsie S. Butler’s Life will be 10:00 a.m., Saturday, February 10, 2024 at Stringer & Griffin Funeral Home 

Chapel with burial to follow at Evergreen Cemetery in Jasper, Texas.  Officiating will be Brother Oddie Powell.  Visitation will be 9:00 a.m. until time of service at the Funeral Home.  

Services are under the direction of Stringer & Griffin Funeral Home of Jasper.
