Citizens gathers in Protest & to Petition AGAINST Ordinance 23-08

[City of Newton] - A local group met on Saturday afternoon at Caney Creek Park to gather signatures in opposition to the City of Newton's Animal Control Ordinance 23-08.

Many Newton citizens are standing up and speaking out against a recent attempt to revise Ordinance 17-12 concerning Animal Control in the City of Newton.

The petition has been put together by local business owner and livestock owner Jamey Spears. Spears states that he believes that this is an infringement on his rights as a homeowner.

City of Newton citizen Terryl Gipson asked, "Why are they going after chickens when they have packs of dogs running all over town? I have spent my own money trying to protect my chickens from these stray dogs, and now the city is going after my chickens? This is Stupid! Why are they not focusing on crime instead of chickens."

According to the City of Newton's website Ordinance 17-12 was a 2017 replacement for Ordinance 99-9. Ordinance 17-12 is an ordinance designed to address Canines Only. NewtonCountyDaily.com was not able to locate Ordinance 99-9 on the city's website, however we did locate Ordinance 10-15, under Health & Safety Ordinances, which states the rules concerning the Keeping of Livestock, Fowl Running at Large, Keeping of Poultry, Fowl &/or Small Fur-Bearing Animals and Swine:

Ordinance 10-15 already outlines the rules concerning how many Chickens, Turkeys, Ducks, Geese, pigeons and other fowl as well as the parameters around "fur-bearing animals."

The City of Newton will hold public hearing on Wednesday, August 2nd 10 A.M. and on Tuesday, August 22nd at 5:30 P.M. at the Newton City Hall, Council Meeting Room, 101 North Street, Newton, Texas 75966 on Ordinance 23-08
